Our History

Mabohanday organization was founded in North Brunswick New Jersey in 1987. The idea took shape after the death of an unpopular Limba man. The practice in our Sierra Leonean community was to pull our resources together to give the dead a decent and befitting funeral. But the death of this particular gentleman was treated rather differently, as calls were only made to people of Limba pedigree to bury the dead man. This unfair practice infuriated the Limba community in New Jersey, as the whole Sierra Leonean community had deviated from the burial procedure. This, however, galvanized the Limbas in New Jersey to come together; to begin to look for alternative ways to give our brother a decent burial. Surprisingly, the larger Sierra Leonean community in NJ and other surrounding states later joined the efforts. People have the capacity to do great things when the need arises.

It was after this historic funeral that the Limba community in New Jersey decided to form an organization that would bring all Limbas together, irrespective of dialect, to alleviate similar problems. The result was the birth of the Mabohanday organization. The first meeting took place in a Georgetown apartment in Brunswick, NJ. The first meeting was attended by 8 members.

The most significant aspect of the organization since its inception in 1987 was our strong belief in giving back to our communities in Sierra Leone. This was a value we were willing to pursue and to sacrifice for because we wanted to make a positive difference in the lives of our less fortunate folks back home. We realized that we are not complete until we were able to create opportunities for more people to reach their full potential.

We have accomplished a lot since the formation Mabohanday. We have buried all members that have passed with respect and dignity, we have given scholarship to deserving underprivileged children; organized book drives; gave financial assistance to some members of the Islamic and Christian communities in Sierra Leone; donated medical supplies to hospitals; and procured medical equipment to eradicate the Ebola virus in our country.

Mabohanday organization has generated so much awareness that we now have 11 chapters in the USA and Europe:  New Jersey, Pennsylvania/Delaware/South Jersey, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, New York, Texas, Georgia, California, Netherlands, United Kingdom/Ireland. Canada will soon be joining the family,

Our organization is willing to partner with individuals and other nonprofit organizations that share our core values.
